Triple Generations of Helping Hands
Bernard "Chip" Chiappone is no stranger to Deborah's hallways. Since 1982 he has had numerous procedures here-catheterizations, surgeries, stents and a pacemaker implant to name a few. He's also been an active volunteer since 1984, as a member of both the Zipper and Zapper Clubs. He's held hands, given comfort and been an all-around support person for worried patients.
Chip's love of volunteering has trickled down to his daughter, Evelyn Richardson, who now comes in twice a month to help out. Adding to the family tradition is granddaughter, Jennifer Boyer, who as an aspiring nursing student is finding satisfaction and professional development in her volunteering.
For the trio, Deborah has become a routine part of their lives. According to Chip, the secrets to helping Deborah's patients are a sense of humor, a smile, and compassion. "I feel good knowing that I've helped someone. I know their fears. I've been there," Chip said."It's good to feel helpful and useful," added Evelyn.

The Clinical Volunteer Program at Deborah Heart and Lung Center
Many high school and college students and adult volunteers share their time and talent and truly make a difference each day in the lives of our patients and their families. Volunteers serve an important role within the hospital environment by supporting and enhancing our services and providing a personal touch to our patients. Deborah offers individuals who have completed the 9th grade a flexible and dynamic volunteer program designed to accommodate schedules and abilities of volunteers of all ages and backgrounds. Assignments are designed to blend your individual skills and talents with the needs of our patients and the hospital.
A Rewarding Experience
All prospective volunteers are interviewed to match their interests and talents with available volunteer positions at Deborah. Clinical Volunteers are expected to serve a minimum of 4 hours total, two days a week. In return, they receive complimentary parking and lunch or dinner on the day they serve - not to mention the opportunity to make new friends and the satisfaction that comes from helping to make hospital stays more pleasant for patients and their family members.
Opportunities
Students who volunteer may find that volunteering provides them with a good opportunity to learn what is involved in a career in healthcare. Clinical volunteer duties include transporting patients, sitting and reading with patients and other efforts to assist the nursing staff.
